The Bahamas are a small group of more than three thousand islands and cays located southeast of Florida and just above the Caribbean Greater Antilles islands of Cuba, Hispaniola and Puerto Rico. Technically, the Bahamas are not part of the Caribbean, but they are often considered to be closely linked due to their proximity to the region.
The Bahamas or "Commonwealth of the Bahamas" covers a total land mass of over 5,000 square miles with a population of 350,000. The capital is Nassau on New Providence island. The official language of the Bahamas is English, after gaining independence from the British in 1793.
