Castries is the capital city of St Lucia and the main port. The port area receives both commercial ships and cruise ships. At busy times, four or more cruise ships can be docked in the harbour and St Lucia is one of the most popular destinations in the Caribbean. |
Duty free shopping is located at Point Seraphine (north side of the harbour) and La Place Carinage and the main town is a short walk from the berths. Local sights of interest include the Cathedral, Derek Walcott Square, Government House and Fort Charlotte.
Arriving cruise ship passengers will notice an airport to the north side of Castries; the Vigie or (George F L Charles Airport) serves local flights within the Caribbean region and long haul flights are served by the Hewanorra International Airport which is located on the southern tip of St Lucia.

The original capital of St Lucia was Soufriere (near the Pitons) and Castries was founded as a safe anchorage by the French rulers in 1650. Under later British rule, Castries became a major naval port in the early to mid nineteenth century and was capable of servicing the entire British navy.
The town you see today is fairly modern with mostly block and brick buildings following rebuilding after a major fire in 1948 which destroyed much of the old town of Castries. |
