Montserrat Reconstruction |
|
The reconstruction of essential facilities on Montserrat is well underway following the devastating volcanic eruption which destroyed the capital of Plymouth. As more than half of the island is within the exclusion zone of the volcano, all new buildings are at the northern end of Montserrat. |
The photos above and below (bottom) show the new "Gerald's airport" terminal and runway under construction, which replaced the old Bramble Airport. Now finished, the new airport was officially opened by Princess Anne in 2005. From October 2008, scheduled flights were resumed from Antigua and St Maarten with Windward islands Airways.
The airport's working title of "Gerald's Airport" (as it is located next to Gerald's village) was re-named in July 2008 to the John A Osborne Airport. (Osborne was the Chief Minister from 1978 until 2006 and then again in the same office from 2001 until 2006). |
Above is a new gas station in St Peters and a new fire station in Brades. All reconstruction on the northern part of Montserrat is hopefully now firmly out of reach of the volcano. A new Ferry service from February 2009 has been operating between Antigua and Brades. |
