Welcome to Trunk Bay on St John in the US Virgin Islands. This beach has consistently appeared in the list of top ten beaches in the World and is a good enough reason to visit St John. Trunk Bay is within the boundary of the Saint John's National Park in the United States Virgin Islands and a ten minute drive from the ferry dock in Cruz Bay. |
The beach is a highly recommended cruise ship excursion if you are visiting St Thomas; however, be warned the beach is so beautiful that you may be sharing with a few others! Regular ferries operate from Charlotte Amalie to Cruz Bay and colourful open sided buses take visitors on the narrow winding road to Trunk which passes Caneel and Hawks Nest on the way. |

There is quite a well known underwater snorkel trail just off the beach and snorkel gear can be rented locally. It's quite safe for a novice to snorkel over the coral reef in the pristine and crystal clear water and there is usually a life guard on duty. Just follow the underwater signs.
There is a car park, beach bar, food kiosk, gift shop, telephones, picnic tables, modern toilets and showers located just behind the beach. As the bay is the most visited on St John, the facilities are good and provide everything you might require for a day trip. If it all sounds too organised and a little bit too commercial; rest assured the beach is well worth visiting and the facilities are tastefully done and do not detract from the natural beauty.

History of Trunk Bay: In the colonial period the area was a sugar cane estate until slavery was abolished and the whole island suffered a decline. The cove remained privately owned until 1958 when it was purchased along with 100 acres of surrounding land by Laurance Rockefeller. Rockefeller donated the cove, along with other land, to the National Park service.
Other coves and beaches on Saint John which are worth exploring are Caneel (the former home of Rockefeller), Hawks Nest, Maho and Cinnamon bays.
