St Croix Travel Guide - US Virgin Islands |
|
Welcome to St Croix on the Paradise Islands website. St Croix is the largest of the United States Virgin Islands (28 miles long and 7 miles wide) and it lies some 36 miles south of St Thomas. |
St Croix has two main towns, Christiansted and Frederiksted and has a population of around 60,000. The largest town Christiansted only has a population of 3,000, so the island's people are fairly evenly spread. Locals refer to themselves as 'Crucians' and many migrated from Puerto Rico over a 30 year period before and after the second world war. |
Notable landmarks include Fort Christianvaern built in 1749 and Buck Island nature reserve which is popular with snorkelers on the surrounding reef. |
Tourism is not as important to the economy as it is in St Thomas and St John. The island of St Croix is more industrialised than many other Caribbean islands with a large oil refinery and Rum Distillery which was founded in 1760. |
