Eustasia, Prickly Pear and Mosquito Islands

Aerial photo showing the islands of Eustasia / Eustatia, Prickly Pear and Mosquito / Moskito with Gorda in the back ground. Necker Island is directly below the helicopter and out of view. Eustasia, Prickly Pear and Mosquito islands lie just north of Gorda.

Eustasia Island (also called Eustatia) is a privately owned island of just 28 acres and includes three houses, two of which we understand to available to rent - Seaside Villa and Hilltop Villa. Eustatia is rocky with several small beaches and the island is covered in cedar trees and cactus and nearby Eustatia reef is a good place for snorkelling.

Prickly Pear Island is the largest of the three Caribbean islands (171 acres) in the photograph and is a BVI National Park since 1988 which means that little or no further development of Prickly Pear will be permitted. The island has some great beaches including Vixen Point which is also a good anchorage for visiting yachts and another feature of Prickly Pear is the salt ponds.

Moskito Island (also called Mosquito) is in the top right corner of the aerial photograph. Moskito was named after the Moskito Indians who lived there before the 14th Century, but is often referred to as Mosquito Island. This small jewel is 124 acres is mostly abandoned (2006) and the resort of Drake's Anchorage that was once popular in the 1960's and 1970' is uninhabited. The Moskito Island resort was established in the 1960's by a local Bert Kilbride (the "Last Pirate of the Caribbean") who spent his life searching for hidden treasure. Kilbride's resort closed in 1997 and reopened for a short period in 2000.

Latest news February 2007: It has been reported that Sir Richard Branson has purchased Moskito Island for a reported £10 million. Moskito Island is just over a mile from Sir Richard Branson's other Caribbean island of Necker.

His plans supposedly include turning Moskito Island into a luxury eco friendly resort with Balinese style villas similar to those on Necker (see Bali Cliff, Bali Hi and Lo and the Great House). He expects the island to be carbon neutral with alternative wind and wave power.

It is anticipated that the new Moskito Island resort will open in around 2-3 years time.
