Overview photograph of Road Town and Road Harbour taken from inland |
Road Town is the capital of the British Virgin Islands on the main island of Tortola. Centred in the large protected horseshoe shaped Road Bay, the town is the hub of busy island life and the main port of debarkation for visiting cruise ships. Regular ferries operate to all the smaller islands in the BVI chain as well as Charlotte Amalie on St Thomas and Cruz Bay on St John in the US Virgin islands.

The word "road" (as in Road Town) is a nautical term which is derived from "the roads" meaning a sheltered place to drop anchor. The principle industry of Tortola is tourism and the island has the largest fleet of rental yachts in the Caribbean (called bare boats) for self chartering; many of the sailing yachts are based in Road Town. The port was established by the Dutch pirate (or "privateer") Joost van Dyk in 1625. The first official permanent Dutch settlement dates from 1662.
